A long-tail keyword is a keyword phrase that contains at least three words (though some say two or more is considered long-tail). Long-tail keywords are used to target niche demographics rather than mass audiences. In other words, they're more specific and often less competitive than generic keyword terms.

Long tail keywords are used when the website wants to refine search terms to the web page, as well as when the searcher is looking for something rather specific. Like normal keywords, long tail keywords are used to define what is on the web page and what the publisher wants to be found under in search engines and on search engine results pages.

Long tail keywords are only used to rank your website faster in search engines, as they have less number of searches in search engines. They help to drive traffic but not to that extent compared to the high priority keywords.

Long tail keywords are a type of keyword phrase that has at least three, and some times as many as five words in the phrase. Long tail keywords are used when the website wants to refine search terms to the web page, as well as when the searcher is looking for something rather specific.

The long tail of SEO is an idea that stems from the keyword distribution on a given topic.

At the "head" of the search curve, you'll have one or two phrases that are searched quite often (e.g., "ice cream."). These phrases are often very competitive.

In the "chunky middle," you'll see phrases that are searched somewhat often (e.g., "chocolate ice cream"). They have less competition than the "head" terms.

Finally, at the "long tail" you have very specific terms (e.g., "double chocolate fudge ice cream"). While each long tail term is seldomly searched, people using them are much closer to buying than folks using a "head" term.

These terms often have much less competition than either the "head" or "chunky middle" terms and they convert better. For these reasons Internet marketers will tell people to "focus on the long tail of search" when optimizing their site for SEO.
